イギリスに移住してから、自炊をする機会が増えました。僕が受ける印象ですが、イギリスでは、外食は「お出かけ」に位置付けられており高いです。ですので、日本のように気軽に外食は、できません。また近所にスーパーやレストランもないので、必然的に自炊が多くなります。
Since moving to the UK, I have had more opportunities to cook for myself. In the UK, eating out is positioned as a “going out” and is expensive. Therefore, it is not possible to eat out as casually as in Japan. Also, there are no supermarkets or restaurants nearby, so I have to cook for myself more often.
毎日のように自炊をしなければならないことは、時々億劫に感じます。ただ、イギリスでは食料品など生活必需品には、消費税がかからないので、いろんな食材を少し安く購入できるメリットが、あります。
Having to cook for myself every day sometimes feels like a chore. However, in the UK, there is no consumption tax on groceries and other daily necessities, so there is an advantage in being able to buy a variety of foods at a slightly lower price.
日本にいた頃から料理をしていましたが、頻度が上がった今、欲しくなるのは、便利なキッチン用品。日本のキッチン用品は、性能と物持ちが良い上に、イギリスで購入するのに比べて、リーズナブルに感じます。そこで、今年の秋に日本に帰国した際に、キッチン用品買ってきましたので、その中からおすすめを3つご紹介します。
I have been cooking since I was in Japan, but now that I cook more frequently, I find myself wanting useful kitchen utensils. Japanese kitchen utensils seem to be reasonably priced compared to those in the UK, in addition to having good performance and longevity. So, when I returned to Japan this fall, I bought some kitchen utensils, and I would like to recommend three of them to you.
セラミックコーヒーフィルター／Ceramic Coffee Filter
料理…ではないかもしれないですが、日本で購入したキッチン用品で一番重宝していて、「買ってよかった」と思っているのが、セラミック式のコーヒーフィルターです。日本に住んでいた頃から、近所のコーヒー屋さんで豆を買い、挽いて飲んでいます。ずっとペーパーフィルターを使っていたのですが、毎回紙を捨てないといけないのが勿体無いと思っていました。またイギリスでペーパーフィルターは高いです。
Not for cooking, but the most useful kitchen utensil I purchased in Japan and am very satisfied with is a ceramic coffee filter. Ever since I lived in Japan, I have been buying coffee beans from a local coffee shop, grinding them and drinking coffee. I had always used paper filters, but I thought it was a waste to have to throw away the paper every time. Also, paper filters are expensive in the UK.
セラミックコーヒーフィルターの商品はいくつかありますが、レビューを読んで一番評価が良さそうな有田焼のコーヒーフィルターを買いました。繰り返し使えて環境にも優しいですし、丁寧に使えば長持ちし、紙フィルターを買い続けるよりもお得だと思います。コーヒーの味も変わらず美味しいままなので、とても気に入っています。毎日使うので、すでに愛着を感じています。買ってよかったです。
There are several ceramic coffee filter products available, but I bought an Arita ware, a well-known Japanese porcelain, coffee filter that seemed to have the best reputation after reading the reviews. They are environmentally friendly as they can be used repeatedly, and if used carefully, they last a long time and are a better value than continuing to buy paper filters. I like them very much because the taste of the coffee remains the same and delicious. I use it every day and I already feel attached to it. I am glad I bought it.
ブンブンチョッパー／Bunbun chopper (food processor)
これ、持っていなくても、名前を聞いたことがある人はいるのではないでしょうか。持ち手を引っ張ることで容器内の刃が回転し、食材をみじん切りにすることができる、フードプロセッサーです。日本に住んでいた頃から気になっていたのですが、今回帰国時についに購入しました。使ってみて、感動しました。玉ねぎもキャベツも、ニンニクも、あっという間にみじん切りできます。餃子作りなど、みじん切りが必要な料理が楽しくなりました。僕は食洗機対応で少しサイズの大きなぶんぶんチョッパースーパー5を購入しました。
Even if you don’t own one of these, you have probably heard of it. It is a food processor in which the blades inside the container rotate by pulling on the handle to chop the ingredients. I had been curious about this processor since I was living in Japan and finally bought one when I returned to Japan this time. When I used it, I was impressed. I can chop onions, cabbage, and garlic in no time at all. Cooking dishes that require chopping, such as making dumplings, has become a lot of fun. I bought the Bunbun Chopper Super 5, which is dishwasher-safe and a bit larger.
貝印のピーラー／Kaijirushi Peeler
使っていたピーラーの刃がこぼれてしまったのか、野菜やフルーツの皮が剥きづらく皮剥きが億劫になっていました。こちらもレビューを参考に、貝印のピーラーを買ったところ、野菜の皮もフルーツの皮もピーラーでなでるだけでスルスルと皮が剥けます。このピーラーのおかげで料理のハードルが少し下がりました。
The blade of the peeler I was using was chipped, and I was having a hard time peeling vegetables and fruits, making peeling a chore. Based on the reviews, I bought a peeler from Kaijirushi, and now I can smoothly peel both vegetable and fruit peels by just stroking them with the peeler. Thanks to this peeler, the hurdle of cooking has been lowered a little.
