近所に好きなお寿司屋さんがある。もちろん、お店のお料理が美味しいのも僕がそのお店を好きな理由ではあるけれど、僕がそのお店を好きな一番の理由は、お店の人たちがとても優しいから。
There’s a sushi restaurant I love in my neighbourhood. Of course, the delicious food they serve is one reason I like the place, but the main reason I love it is because the people at the restaurant are incredibly kind.
優しさは、予約の電話から始まる。僕のことを声で覚えていてくれて、予約の電話をかけると僕に気づいてくれて、早速お店の人たちの優しさを感じる。
The kindness starts with making a reservation. They remember my voice when I call, and as soon as I make a phone call, they recognize me and I feel their kindness immediately.
「今週も一週間乗り越えた。自分、お疲れさま」と思う時、僕はこのお店に行きたくなる。だから、予約をするのは突発的で、大抵その日の夕方、お店が開いた直後に電話をしてしまう。
When I think, ‘I’ve made it through another week. I should treat myself,’ I want to go to this restaurant. So, making a reservation is often spontaneous, usually in the early evening on the same day they open.
今回もそうだった。急な予約で申し訳ないと思いながら、その日の夜の予約が取れるかどうか電話で聞いてみると、「お店に来てほしいのでなんとかします。大丈夫ですよ！」と予約を受け付けてくれた。明るい声色から笑顔が見えるようだった。
This time was the same. Feeling apologetic for the last-minute reservation, I called to see if I could get a reservation for that evening. They said, ‘We want you to come, so we’ll make it work. Don’t worry!’ Their voice sounded cheerful, and I could almost see their smile.
お店に着くと笑顔で迎えてくれて、美味しいお寿司を頂いた。お店は混んでいて忙しそうだったけれど、お料理を持ってきてくれる度に、普段の生活のことや日本へ帰省する予定など話をした。
When I arrived at the restaurant, they welcomed us with a big smile. We enjoyed their delicious sushi. The restaurant was crowded and busy, but whenever they brought a dish, we chatted about everyday life and plans, like my upcoming trip back to Japan.
カメラロールを見てみると、そのお寿司屋さんで撮った料理の写真が残っている。僕とトムは、半年に一度の頻度でこのお寿司屋さんに通っているようだ。頻度で言うと、そんなに多くはないかもしれないけれど、僕とトムは、このお寿司屋さんとお店の人たちが大好きだ。僕にとっては、海外で一生懸命に生きる自分に「お疲れさま」と声をかけ労ってあげる場所でもある。
Looking at my camera roll, I see photos of the dishes I’ve taken at this sushi restaurant. Tom and I visit this place about once every six months. It might not be that frequent, but we both love this sushi restaurant and the people who work there. It’s also a place where I say ‘Thank you’ to myself for doing my best and living abroad.
